The 7th Grade Boy's Basketball team worked hard all season and it definitely paid off last Saturday in Adler gym. Coach Kevon James and his team finished the regular season of the Metro 10 with a 7-1 season, clinching the number one seed heading into the playoffs. They earned a bye in the first round, then faced a tough St. Francis team on Thursday at home, defeating them 51-34. Advancing to the championship, the boys then faced #2 Mt. Vernon on Saturday at home. In front of a large crowd including the varsity players and coaches from both teams, the championship game did not disappoint. At the end of regulation the game was tied 39-39, forcing a 3 minute overtime. The team stepped up big in overtime playing smart defense, hitting big free throws and making some huge plays. The Tigers held the Mustangs scoreless for all three minutes, clinching the championship with a final score of 45-39. Thanks to all of the parents, fans, and staff who came out to cheer the team on. The future is bright for Tiger basketball.
"Coming out at the start of the game, we got up by almost 10 points. The urgency and the importance of the game seemed to be clear in our guys. As the game moved on it seemed to be a battle of momentum. Both teams battling to own the scoreboard. By Halftime we were down 1, we had lost that battle and were making a slow but steady come back. As we stepped into the locker room we knew this wasn't the way we play, and that we had come too far and improved too much to not give it our all. The boys came out and were immediately back in the action. The game was in its final seconds and we get 2 big defensive stops. This throws us into overtime. They fought hard. They brought all their strength together and finished as a team and as the new Metro 10 7th Grade Champions!" -Coach James
